My Right Hand
I couldn’t do this job on my own. Nick had decided to farm full time and had tired of the hire industry. Our children were ending their education and were fledging. I had slight empty nest syndrome so my taking on Fanfare Event Hire was an obvious step. But I couldn’t do it on my own.
Choosing my ‘Side-kick’ ‘lieutenant’ ‘right hand’ whatever you want to call it, was a bit like choosing the perfect dress. She/he needed to be tailored to my specification. I wanted to be able to breathe and be comfortable whenever we worked together, and if I ever needed her/him to make the business or me look good, I needed to know that I could rely on her/his quality and polish. The chances of my sticking an advertisement in a paper and finding someone who would fit so perfectly was unlikely.
So where did I find Nicky my magical right-hand girl? We have known each for about 10 years. She is an extremely accomplished and competent horsewoman and we met through our mutual love of horses.
As well as her love of horses she is also a fanatical dog lover. She has three. Hazel a Labrador, Lily a springer and Freddie, well he’s a bit of a mixture. She’s as fit as a fiddle and has just completed her first half marathon. She also is a part time paramedic, loves a party and is a great dancer.
We are friends first and foremost but we work so well together. I can rely on her completely and know that she will always keep the boat sailing straight. Last year we inadvertently booked our family holiday during what turned out to be the busiest week of the year. She was amazing. Calm and totally organised.
She has OCD. I love her OCD. Our china and furniture store is immaculate. Not only clean of course, but orderly. She is methodical and organised and then of course there’s also her reversing. She just loves it when a customer questions her reversing ability. Nicky can reverse our Land Rover and trailer round corners, up hills, down lanes and on a sixpence!!!
She’s incredibly hard working. She’s strong. She’s efficient. She’s fun. Really good fun. She’s sunny. We laugh. We laugh a lot.
She’s my right hand girl and I’m lucky to have her.
